Student worker for server OPS

DTU Food, the Division for Global Surveillance, is hiring a student assistant who will be responsible for system administration on a small Linux cluster for research in life science.

The job

The Division for Global Surveillance operates a local 6 node Linux cluster which is used for databases, web applications, visualization tools and other research support tasks for our group. We are currently looking for a student with a background in computer science, or related fields, to be responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of this machine. Your job will be focused on traditional system administration tasks, including software updates, user administration, security patching, backup schemes, etc., with the aim at maintaining smooth operations with as little downtime as possible. We foresee a workload of approximately 10 hours per week on average.

Our expectations of you

We expect that you have a fundamental understanding of the Linux operating system and some prior experience in system administration. You should be comfortable working in a terminal-based Linux environment and know the basics of shell scripting. Knowledge of python, docker, torque, and MySQL is preferred but not essential.

Apart from your technical skills, we expect that you have a sense of good practice in software development and that you understand the need for user-friendliness, accessibility and documentation. We offer complete freedom in terms of work time scheduling, but we expect that you are willing to step in on short notice in case of a server emergency.

What we offer in return

We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international atmosphere with the focus on research, teaching, innovation and scientific advice for the benefit of the surrounding community. We place emphasis on a high level of professionalism among our staff, so skills development is an integral part of our organization. We offer a great flexibility in the position. In the area of technical and natural sciences, DTU is one of the leading research and education institutions in Europe.

Salary and appointment terms

You will be hourly paid in accordance with the OAO-collective agreement and The National Union of Commercial and Clerical Employees in Denmark (HK/Stat) or in accordance with the LC/CO10-collective agreement and the organizational agreement for IT Professionals (PROSA) or another relevant collective agreement affiliation.

The position is for 10 hours per week and the successful candidate should be able to start in the beginning of April 2021.

Application and contact

Please submit your online application no later than 19 March 2021. Open the 'Apply online' link, fill out the form and attach your motivated application, CV, and possibly a link to your public git repositories or other relevant online resources.
