Professorship (with special responsibilities) in Statistical Modelling of Complex Aquatic Living Systems

Applications are invited for a position as professor with special responsibilities in the research field of statistical modelling of complex aquatic living systems. The professorship is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), Section for Marine Living Resources located in Lyngby.

The research of the section addresses biology and ecology of fishes, population genetics, stock structure and dynamics, development of statistical modelling tools and applications for these areas, as well as bio-physical modelling from an individual organism to complex population dynamics. This includes research on the biological mechanisms behind population fluctuations and the development of appropriate mathematical models for assessing the development of fish stocks, how they distribute and interact with each other and the environment, how much they are fished, and the level of exploitation they can sustain within a reasonable prediction horizon. It combines analysis of individual traits in marine organisms, demography, and spatial behaviour and links biological process knowledge with development of statistically based models to interpret noisy data and produce reliable management advice for the exploitation of marine living resources.

Responsibilities and tasks
The professors research field will be

  • to develop algorithms for statistical modelling of nonlinear high-dimensional dynamic systems for areas where time-efficient estimation of complex systems is needed

  • to lead the development of statistical population models for a broad suite of applications in international context, such as in the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea

  • to lead the implementation of statistically sound fish stock assessment and prediction models, and

  • to provide solutions for spatial statistical population and system modelling considering processes impacting on spatial and temporal dynamics of living resources.

The professor is expected to develop the research group and consolidate its international leading position by developing modelling tools and algorithms expanding the palette of software and applications. Research activities are expected to be conducted in cooperation with other research sections at the department, other units at the university, and relevant research groups, primarily in Europe, North America, and Australia/New Zealand.

The position is intended for a candidate with an internationally recognized track record of i) developing and implementing software for modelling nonlinear dynamic systems, ii) modelling complex population dynamics of marine populations, iii) developing and implementing platforms for statistical stock assessment models, and iv) contributing to advisory tasks on fisheries management to public authorities, international advisory bodies, and other stakeholders.

Employment implies original research with high international impact within all the above research themes and a track record in research leadership, including i) visionary strategic development of the research and innovative area, ii) planning, implementing, and running innovative research projects, and iii) coordinating input and contributing to the work of national and international fish stock, fisheries, and advisory bodies.
