PhD positions at The Department of Communication and Arts

The Doctoral School of Communication and Arts (DCA), Roskilde University invites applications for a number of PhD positions. The scholarships are fully funded for 3 years and will be filled on September 1st 2020.

The Department of Communication and Arts

Your daily workplace will be Department of Communication and Arts at Roskilde University. DCA covers RUCs Communication programmes (Communication, Journalism, and Performance Design) and Art programmes (Danish, Philosophy, History, and Cultural Encounters).

It is DCAs  ambition to be leading within the departments research areas, nationally as well as internationally. It is also an ambition to have and to develop local, regional, national, and international research networks with the goal of ensuring the highest quality in all our research-based activities.

DCA aspires to develop an interdisciplinary research profile in the intersection between Communication, Cultural Studies, Social Science, and Humanities. The Department of Communication and Arts is an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment, characterized by diversity with respect to theory, method, and area of study in research and education. Accordingly, our research is characterized by double impact, i.e. by the highest academic quality, and by a direct interaction with public, private and civil actors in the society.

The Doctoral School

The PhD programme in Communication and Arts offers a number of activities from international PhD courses and current master classes with researchers from around the world to writing retreats, frequent work-in-progress seminars as well as informal activities, and we expect you to participate actively in the activities and in creating a dynamic and inspiring PhD environment.

PhD candidates enrolled in DCAs doctoral school are associated with the same research group as the main supervisor and can partake in more research groups if relevant. All PhD candidates are encouraged to collaborate with other research centers and networks both nationally and internationally. In our recruitment process we emphasize the ability to take an active part in collective research processes.

Research project

Proposed PhD projects must be original and relate to or enhance research fields at the department.

Projects placed in the intersection between Communication, Cultural Studies, Social Science, and/or the Humanities will be preferred.

Project descriptions - either in English or Danish - should outline research topic, overall objectives, a state-of-the art of the research field to which the project seeks to contribute, planned methods, empirical material, theoretical approaches and relevant ethical considerations, as well as a schedule for its implementation. The project description including a time schedule should not exceed 5 pages in total. Applicants are strongly encouraged to reflect on how their project relates to present research activities at the department.

Teaching

PhD scholars at DCAs doctoral school are appointed under the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Teaching responsibilities will be planned with the aim of matching the research interests, competences and pedagogical ambitions of the candidate with the needs for research-based teaching at the department. The PhD scholars may teach at both MA and BA levels, at any of DCAs programmes. Teaching at Roskilde University involves supervising problem-oriented project work (PPL read more here) and requires an interdisciplinary approach.

Qualifications and Assessment

The ideal candidates are enterprising and possesses good interpersonal and communication skills. PhD scholars at DCS are required to be visible, involved participants in the departments daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

In the assessment, consideration will be given to the following:

Formal qualifications

 

Professional competences

  • Educational skills and any further professional qualifications

  • Grades at Masters programme or equivalent

  • Ability and sufficient experience to complete the PhD project 

 

Criteria relating to the research project

  • Quality and relevance of the project description

  • Quality and relevance of the methodological and theoretical choice

  • Consistency and coherence between the problem and the choice of method and theory

  • Feasibility of the project

  • Match between project and research groups and supervisors

  • Relevance of the project to the research profile of the Department

Terms of employment

The employment is on full time 37 hours per week and you will refer to Head of Department Julie Sommerlund.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. 

Application procedure

After the deadline for applications the Head of Department will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
