Associate professorship in the philosophy of healthcare

The School of Culture and Society invites applications for an associate professorship in the philosophy of healthcare at the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas. The associate professorship is a permanent position which begins on 1 August 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position

We are seeking an innovative and dedicated candidate with a strong research profile who will contribute to the development of the department and its core activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The associate professor is expected to develop collaborative research initiatives which are suitable for external funding with other fields in the humanities, in healthcare and with partners from Danish healthcare institutions and authorities. Applicants should therefore possess knowledge of the healthcare sector. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the development of philosophy in general from the position of the philosophy of healthcare.

One main area of responsibility for this position is the task of teaching in and coordinating the professional Masters degree programme in humanistic health research and practical development : 
https://cas.au.dk/uddannelse/evu/humanistisk-sundhedsvidenskab-og-praksisudvikling/. This involves coordinating seminars, and contact with students throughout the semester. The coordinator is expected to be present at times of teaching, typically during the weekends, when they will also be required to organise practical issues. The coordinator will also schedule teachers for courses each semester, and will be the primary person of contact for students enrolled in the professional Masters degree programme. The courses in this programme are taught in Danish. As the student body for this programme consists of students with drent backgrounds often professionals and students with a practical background the position involves providing study counselling and presupposes the motivation and desire to teach students with an educational background in the healthcare sector. The coordinator will also have the task of developing the professional Masters programme on an ongoing basis, which includes promoting the programme and developing material for this purpose. Applicants should preferably have knowledge of interdisciplinary teaching in a Danish context, as well as knowledge of teaching students with a variety of backgrounds. Applicants should preferably have experience of working with partners outside the university, and ideally the ability and/or desire to engage with stakeholders within the political field related to health and healthcare.  


The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to core activities at the School of Culture and Society and Aarhus University in general, and in particular to strengthen the research activities and output of the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas. S/he will be expected to take an interest in interdisciplinary research collaboration within the Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas and the departments research programme, the School of Culture and Society, the Faculty of Arts, and departments at the Faculty of Health at Aarhus University and beyond.

In the application, applicants should explicitly present their vision and plans for the development of philosophy of healthcare at Aarhus University with respect to research and teaching. The successful applicant will be expected to develop and submit applications for research funding.

Past research achievements will be assessed based on the active research time available to the applicant in question. We therefore ask applicants to specify any career breaks they have had (for instance due to maternity/paternity leave) in order to gauge their research productivity.


The associate professor will be expected to teach and supervise students at all levels (BA, MA and PhD) and contribute to the development and application of innovative teaching methods. The Department of Philosophy and History of Ideas expects the successful applicant to participate actively in the development of a dynamic teaching environment in dialogue with students and other professors. We emphasise the importance of maintaining a dedicated and respectful relationship between staff and students, so applicants should be able to demonstrate and exemplify their commitment to participatory teaching initiatives and student involvement as part of their teaching portfolio.

Talent development

The associate professor is expected to contribute to talent development in philosophy of health or related areas. The applicant will be expected to recruit and supervise PhD students as well as teaching and developing PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange

It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as described in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts https://arts.au.dk/en/about-arts/strategy-arts-2020-2025/ for instance research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.


Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent qualifications in philosophy or related areas of research, as well as research and teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired in an assistant professorship.

Applicants must be able to document: 

  • An internationally oriented research profile
  • A strong, relevant international publication profile
  • Experience of participation in collective research projects
  • Successful teaching experience in areas of relevance
  • Participation in national and international networks, as well as experience of interdisciplinary cooperation
  • Experience of attracting external research funding
  • Experience of supervising student projects.

Knowledge of the Danish healthcare system would also be an advantage.

The applicant is invited to submit a research plan outlining plans for the first three years of employment.

Applicants are expected to contribute to the departments academic environment. We emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students. 

In order to maintain and develop the departments research environment, the person appointed is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis.

Language and further information

Applicants must be able to teach and supervise in Danish at university level.

If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, s/he will be expected to acquire the language within a period of approximately two years.
