Assistant Professor at the Danish Institute for Advanced Study

The Danish Institute for Advanced Study seeks an outstanding candidate to fill a position at the Assistant Professor level.

The position is sponsored by the Department of Design and Communication and starts August 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The department resides at the University of Southern Denmarks campus in Kolding. The place of employment is campus Kolding, but the successful candidate is expected to be at the DIAS in Odense on a weekly basis.

The appointment is for four years with the possibility for a subsequent two years of employment as an Associate Professor.

We offer a uniquely ambitious research environment and ample research funding attached to this particular position, and, for the successful candidate, a position where options for tenure will be discussed during a third-year review. Beyond this seed funding and besides being part of an excellent academic environment, D-IAS offers the strongest possible support in applications for further external funding from prestigious national and European funding schemes, e.g., Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions and the ERC starting grants.

The present position is in the fields of: Humanities: Computational thinking, Visualization, and Digital Humanities

The successful candidate will have a strong international profile, a strong record of research publications, and have demonstrated exceptional potential to excel in scientific research.

We expect the applicants to actively engage in the development of the research unit as well as contribute positively to Danish IAS as a whole.

Danish IAS

The Danish IAS at SDU is a research centre that aims to inspire ground-breaking ideas through the meeting of minds across the sciences and humanities. The Danish IAS engages leading academics through its visitor programme, weekly lectures, and quarterly colloquia. There is a strong focus on talent development of young researchers who work on game-changing ideas. Eminent academics are appointed as chairs, and in that capacity form the backbone of the Danish IAS as they catalyze activities within their field.

Computational thinking, Visualization, and Digital Humanities

We welcome applicants with a basis in the use of ICT for knowledge representation and learning and an interdisciplinary orientation who are prepared to participate in the cross-disciplinary cooperation at the department.

The Department for Design and Communication is currently establishing a Center for Computational Thinking, in collaboration with Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. Special focus areas for the center are design for learning computational thinking; computational thinking, modelling, and visualization within the humanities; and computational thinking through computational things (physical ICT). The selected applicant is expected to participate actively in the center and, in particular, to strengthen the centers profile within Computational thinking, visualization and digital humanities.

It is a requirement for the position that the applicant should have documented research qualifications within use of ICT for knowledge representation, modelling, and visualization within humanistic disciplines. Applicants who have worked with computational thinking or designs for learning with ICT will be preferred. Programming skills are welcomed but not required.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2015 (the document only exists in Danish).

It applies for all positions that they will only cover teaching requirements from related areas, including interdisciplinary teaching activities and Cand. Negot. courses. Research will be predominant in this position.

To qualify for the position as assistant professor you must have completed a PhD-degree by the application deadline.

  • Complete list of publications, indicating which publications are most relevant for the position

  • For any publication with a co-author, a co-author statement must be submitted as part of the pdf-file
  • Three letters of recommendation from acknowledged international researchers which should be submitted directly by the references to raabe@sdu.dk mentioning your name and the title of the position in the subject line. And please note that these also need to reach us before deadline.

Application and all appendices must be in Danish, English or one of the Scandinavian languages. Please always include a copy of original diploma/certificates.

We only accept files in pdf-format no more than 10 MB per file. In case you have more than one file per field you need to combine the pdf-files into a single file, as each field handles only one file. We do not accept zip-files, jpg or other image files. All pdf-files must be unlocked and allow binding and may not be password protected. Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee and the committee will assess whether you are qualified to be an Assistant Professor. The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.

When the assessment committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her. The assessment report will subsequently be forwarded to the Head of Department who will assemble an appointments committee. An interview may form part of the overall assessment of the applicants qualifications.  

If the application does not meet the requirements mentioned above, the Faculty of Humanities may reject your application without further notice. Applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.

Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process.
